What Should I Say On My Application?

So while your profile is your CV (Resume), your application is like your cover letter, see so much like applying for a job!

Your first step is to read the house sitting opportunity and what the homeowner is looking for, especially if it involves taking care of any animals.  Then tailor your response to their 'advertisement'.

Aspects you can consider including are;

  • Why you want to do that particular sit

  • Why you'd be perfect for the sit and the reason they should consider you

  • If the homeowner/pet parent is looking for a particular type of sitter, let them know how you fit this criteria

  • Ask any questions you have

  • Answer any questions they have in what they are looking for

  • Use the name of the animals if they've been provided

  • Offer to do a video / phone call with them

  • Let them know to ask any questions they may have of you

  • If you have specific requirements on arrival/departure times let them know

  • Clarify the dates.  Most people put the dates like you would do when booking accommodation, but the 'check in and check out time', doesn't necessarily work the same!  I have been 'caught' where they want you to stay a night with them before they leave at 'stupid o'clock' the next morning or arriving back at some silly hour on the day the sit is meant to finish or even early hours of the next morning!

It may or may not take some time to get your first house sitting gig, but persevere and you'll have a number them under your belt in no time.  Once you have started getting those positive rave reviews, getting future ones keeps getting easier and easier!
